ABOUT US"To imagine what it feels like to be someone else – this is the essence of humanity. This is the basis of compassion, of sympathy, the starting point of morality." (Ian McEwan)
The Káva Drama/Theatre in Education Association is a public utility organisation providing art and education projects, operating as an association since 1996. As the first TIE company in Budapest our main task is to create complex theatre in education and drama programmes, in which we analyse social and moral problems through action with the participants. The young people are not only observers, but also the writers, directors and actors of the story which is created through thinking, analysing, compression, transformation and in many cases through performing certain situations. In our work we aim at reaching high aesthetic quality and the complex application of various learning forms. The significance and effect of our programmes for children and youth goes far beyond the traditional frames of theatre. Teaching democracy, examining age problems, social and moral issues are in the focus of our work. When working with children we use theatre as a tool to find ways to a deeper understanding of problems. We work with groups of 9-18 years old children and young people – many of them disadvantaged – all over the country.
Schools and children do not pay for participating in our programmes! We aim at providing as many children with our programmes as possible, irrespective of their financial situation.
More than 60 000 young people have taken part in our programmes since the establishment of our group.
The founders of the group are among the most experienced and well-trained theatre and drama in education experts in Hungary. Besides actively contributing to the operation and development of an informal network of the Hungarian theatre in education, the members of our company find it essential to explore new possibilities implied in the method, to enrich the Hungarian system of dramapedagogy with new experimental formulas, to create meaningful and effective complex theatre in education programmes.
