Drama Drom

In the “DramaDrom – the way of drama” programme we work with integrated communities of young Roma and non-Roma people. During our work we use the tools of dramapedagogy, youth theatre, theatre in education and co-training to foster a positive change in the self- evaluation, self-respect and problem-solving skills of these children.

The programme was launched in 2001 by Káva, and nowadays it is a model programme, which was invited to Washington in 2003 and was selected into the 200 best projects all over the word.

For seven years, the base of the project had been the Collegium Martineum in Mánfa. Following the on-going drama programmes and trainings during the whole of the school year, every July the participants spent a week together in a camp. During this week the actor-dramateachers and the young people worked together to create two performances, which were taken on a summer tour. The stations of this tour were isolated villages, populated mostly by Roma people, where the villagers practically never had the chance to see theatre. This way the young participants had the opportunity to show their talent in their own home-villages or towns.

Last year the programme moved to Budapest, to the 8th district, into the Kesztyűgyár Community House. The members of the new group come from schools in the district, or are delegated by the different local civil organisations. Due to its complexity, we can say that our programme is a unique one. Dramapedagogy and acting are used as tools for developing different competences, such as problem-solving, decision making and communication skills, or for strengthening the set of intrinsic values.
Being a part of the performances contributes to the artistic development of the participants, it improves self expression, thus strengthens self-confidence and makes the participants more self-assured. The performances also give the opportunity to the young people to show their friends and families how they have improved and what they have learnt, and thus they set a promising example to their audience (multiplicating effect).

A tracking was done about the DramaDrom programme by sociologists in 2005. In September 2005 a documentary directed by Júlia Sívó and András Surányi Z was completed.

This school year a research is being carried out by Zsuzsa Nagy (culture anthropologist) focussing on the target-group of the programme.
Our workshops are lead by dramateachers, Yvett Feuer and György Egervári.

Our last performance, made in 2009: “Teaching them a lesson”
Director: András Sereglei

This season, the realisation of the programme is enabled by Rév8.
